COMPARISON OF THE EFFICACY OF PHOTOTHERAPY WITH WHITE AND BLUE LIGHTS ON NEONATAL HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA

Abstract

 Hyperbilirubinemia is a common problem and usually a benign disease of NEONATEs. All the same the indirect severe HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA, which isn't "treated, potentially is considered poisonous to the nervous system.This clinical trial study was carried out to compare the efficacy of PHOTOTHERAPY with blue and white lights on reduction rate of HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA in 60 hospitalized term NEONATEs suffering from jaundice in Khoramabad Shahid Madani hospital in 2000.Subjects were selected among full term NEONATEs who were breast fed and none of them suffered from hemolysis due to RH or other factors. All the NEONATEs were in second to eighth day of their life. They were divided into two groups of 30, one group was put under blue light and the other one under white light. Blood samples were taken from them before and during the PHOTOTHERAPY four times a day (once every six hours). Then blood samples were sent to the hospital laboratory to determine and to measure total and direct bilirubin level.Results showed that total blood bilirubin levels in the first, second and third days after PHOTOTHERAPY with blue and white lights were significantly lower than those of before PHOTOTHERAPY (P<0.01).There was no. significant. difference in direct bilirubin levels in both blue and white groups after PHOTOTHERAPY, but changes of total bilirubin level in blue group was significantly more than white group during the first, second and third days of the treatment in comparison with its level before the treatment (P<0.01). Regarding the obtained results white light can be used for treatment of neonatal HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA in the case of lacking blue light.
