Abstract

Zinc deficiency may Cause GROWTH failure and SHORT STATURE. The purpose of this study is the comparison between hair zinc level in short children and a control group. This descriptive - analytical study was done on 35 short children of 4-17 years old referring to the pediatric endocrinology Center of Isfahan in 1379. The hair Samples were prepared from occipital region and were sent to the Central laboratory of Miniatore - Neutron - Source - reactor (MNSR) and zinc concentration measured by Neutron - Activation - Analysis (NAA) Method. ZINC DEFICIENCY is defined as hair zinc level <110 PPm. Mean hair zinc level in short children was 144.734.34 PPM and in Control group was 133.7738.85 PPm. Mean hair zinc level in short boys was 131.4247.35 PPm and in short girls was 183.1149.05 PPm (P=0.009). Therefore, it seems that ZINC DEFICIENCY isn't a prominent etiology of SHORT STATURE, and probably other etiologic factors, genetic factors and unknown etiologies may exist which are worth evaluation.
