FAMILIAL AGGREGATION OF BODY MASS INDEX IN ADULT POPULATION OF TEHRAN

Abstract

To assess the FAMILIAL AGGREGATION of OBESITY and BMI in Tehran adult citizens. A cross sectional population based Family Study was carried on the familial set including father, mother, daughter and son. Stratified random cluster sampling was used to sample individuals from 160 clusters. Weight, height and other variables data were gathered. To estimate the intera-familial correlation of BMI, Random effect ANOVA model was used and interclass Correlation Coefficient (rho) was calculated. Second-order generalized estimating equations model was performed for estimating the FAMILIAL AGGREGATION of OBESITY and overweight between child-child and spouses in families. Data of 2573 adult "individuals from 1243 families were analyzed. Standardized mean of BMI was 25.5 (CI 95%: 25.3- 25.7). Intraclass correlation between brothers was 0.4, sisters 0.3 and spouses 0.12. Odds ratio of FAMILIAL AGGREGATION for OBESITY after confounding factors adjustment in GEE2 model was 9.27 (CI 95%: 2.37-35.8) in children of the families and 1.47 (CI 95%: 0.93-2.33) in the spouses. Our results were similar to the other familial based studies which had showed different degrees of FAMILIAL AGGREGATION of OBESITY. In our study the most aggregation of BMI and OBESITY were seen between the children of the families; although different studies have addressed the most aggregation among the various pairs of the families.
