Title

PREVALENCE OF HELICOBACTER PYLORI INFECTION IN PATIENTS WITH ULCERATIVE COLITIS GROUP

Pages

  77-83

Abstract

Background: Recently, lower prevalence of Helicobacter pylori has been reported in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases and its cause is not described, yet. Our objective was to evaluate the prevalence of Hp infection in patients with ULCERATIVE COLITIS and its association with SULFASALAZINE usage. Material and Methods: 212 patients with ULCERATIVE COLITIS who have been referred to Imam Khomeini Hospital between Sep 23,2000 and Sep 22,2002 were enrolled prospectively as the case group. 221 patients with irritable bowel syndrome who have been matched with the case group in age, sex, and socio-economic level, were considered as the control group. Patients with a history of treatment for Hp or antibiotic usage during 2 months prior to study were excluded. Anti H pylori IgG was checked for all patients using ELlSA. Results: Seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori in case and control group were 35.4% and 69.7%, respectively (P value<0.001). 69.3% of patients with ULCERATIVE COLITIS were using SULFASALAZINE. Seroprevalence of Hp was 38.1 % in patients who was using sulfasalzine which showed no significant difference to patients who did not use SULFASALAZINE, in whom the seroprevalence of Hp was 31.7%. There was no significant association between seroprevalence of Hp and extension of disease, smoking, and duration of disease. Hp infection prevalence was increased with age. Discussion: In patients with ULCERATIVE COLITIS the seroprevalence of Hp is significantly lower, but it needs much more investigation to describe the probable causes more definitely.
