Abstract

Objective: Acute VIRAL hepatitis (AVH) is a relatively common disease, that can be relieved completely or lead to many late complications like asymptomatic carrier, chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. This study aimed to find etiology of acute VIRAL hepatitis (hepatitis viruses A, B, C and D) and frequency distribution of known risk factors in these patients. Methods: We evaluated 40 patients of AVH who reffered fo Tehran Hepatitis Center. The main criteria for diagnosis were clinical manifestation (icter), elevated liver enzyme (more than 7 times), ALT more than AST and serological evidence of hepatitis viruses (A-D). The necessary information of risk factors were asked the patients and their prognosis was evaluated from next visits. Results: Of 40 patients, 7 (17.5%) had serological evidence of HAV; evidence of H8V infection was found in 23 (57.5%); HCV markers detected in 4 patients (10%) and four patients (10%) had both HCV and H8V markers. One patient (2.5%) had hepatitis B and D, and one patient (2.5%) had hepatitis A and HBV marker. The mean serum level of ALT was highest in hepatitis B-C (1195.2 lU/L) and then hepatits B (1024.5 lU/L) and hepatitis A (1005 Lu/L). The most risk factors in hepatitis A was unknown (57.1%) and contact with icteric patients (16.7%); in hepatitis B was tattooing (17.4%) and contact with a jundiced patient (17.4%); in hepatitis C was history of prison (75%), IV drug abuser and non IV drug abuser (75%).Conclusion: In spite of the fact that, we evaluated relatively few numbers of AVH patients, the results showed that the most etiologic factor of AVH is hepatitis B. These frequencies mostly adjusted with researches of other countries.
