Abstract

The Spatial inequality in access to the ICT is often referred to as the DIGITAL DIVIDE, which includes unequal distribution of opportunities and resources across different Spaces. The most noticeable forms of this type of inequality in the developing countries include inequality between the urban and rural regions, the big and small cities, and the deprived and privileged areas within the big cities. The DIGITAL DIVIDE is not limited to the access alone as it includes the availability of information technologies and their required infrastructure, the quality of their use, the extent to which they meet the psychosocial needs of the people, and the financial feasibility of their deployment. Such inequalities are not only rooted in many different factors discussed herein, but interface differently with different social institutions such as the educational system. In addition to paying attention to the interface between education and the DIGITAL DIVIDE, the present paper attempts a critical review of the opportunities and threats facing the educational system in this area and gives appropriate suggestions where possible.
