Abstract

Hubayš ibn Ibrāhīm Teflīsī is a distinguished scholar and physician of the 6th/12th century who spent most of his life in Asia Minor, and especially in Qūnīyyeh (Koniya). He is the author of several treatises on medicine and pharmacology, which remain mostly unpublished, and the Persian terms he uses in these texts, are of special interest to scholars, because they reflect the linguistic characteristics of the Persian spoken in Western Iran and Asia Minor at the time. These words, which have been extracted and published in scholarly papers by Īraj Afšār (in 1957 and 1963) and Dr. Mehdī Mopaqqeq (in 2000) are mainly names of medicinal herbs and pharmacological ingredients that were found in three of Hubayš's works, namely Kāmil al- Ta 'bīr,Bayān al-Sina 'āt and Taqvīm al-Adwīya.In the present paper the author examines another of Hubayš's treatises, which is entitled Kīfāyat al-'Tib. This was compiled in 550/1155 and dedicated to Malek Shah, the Seljuk ruler of Asia Minor. The author uses three of the six MSS of the book that are known to exist in Iran for his research, and highlights nearly a hundred Persian words that he has handpicked from the text, and subjected them to an exhaustive examination. He does the same thing with the list extracted from Taqvīm al-Adwīya, and corrects a number of misreading that had found their way into the list at its first publication. The author's conclusion from his comparative examination of these Persian words is the consistency of the Arabic equivalents which have been given for them in Taqvīm al-Adwīyaand Kīfāyat al-'Tib. But he says there is no such consistency between these and a later work of Hubayš entitled Qānūn-e Adab.Dr. sādeqī says Hubayš must have been using at this another Arabic-Persian dictionary and he must have forgotten that he had used a different set of equivalents for these terms in his earlier works.
