Abstract

The local vernacular of the people of Gilan, Gīlakī, belongs to the group of Iranian dialects spoken in the Caspian littoral, with a phonological profile that places it in the north-western branch of Iranian languages. As the people of the province commingle in ever larger numbers with Persian-speaking Iranians, and as the country's mass media propagate, day and night, the standard Persian of Tehran, the Gīlakī dialect, like all he other local dialects of the country, is losing ground and some of its original character. A number of Gīlakī words are becoming obsolete and some are being replaced by their standard Persian cognates or equivalents. In this paper, the author lists some 40 Gīlakī words, which he feels may have been already forgotten by the younger Gilaks, and in each instance he gives the etymology of the word, tracing back its origin to some early Iranian form. The first word in the list is āgūz (walnut) and the last word is vīrīs (a rope made from rice stalks).
