Abstract

Professor Mojtaba Minovi has interpreted the word mireh, used in Kalileh va Demneh, as "adulterer". The question the writer discusses in this paper is whether this interpretation is warranted. To do so, the writer ẹxplores the etymology of the word, which he finds essential to understanding the meaning of the word as used in Kalileh va Demneh. The word, originally mάryah, as used in the Veda literature, meant ''young man or lover", underwent a negative semantic change in the Avesta, coming to be used in the meaning of "rascal". Also, in ancient texts, the word was associated with a group of young men who were members of an established institution. This latter meaning contributed to its extensive usage in various periods. After the Islam, the word continued to live in the meaning of "chivalrous". In her etymological examination of the word, the writer has compared certain fundamental rituals common among the Society of Young Men before and after Islam.
