Abstract

Mahmūd Pasīkānī (d 831 A.H./1427-28 C.E.) is one of the founders of the Noqtavīyyah movement, whose unorthodox religious beliefs were embraced mainly by a growing number of dervishes and Sufis in the early Safavid period, and it was finally suppressed by Shah 'Abbas in 1002/1593-94. Of Mahmūd Pasīkānī's various writings, only four items have survived: two treatises which were published by Dr. sādeq Kīā (PasīPasīkānīān Tehran, 1331 AH.S.), and two books, respectively entitled Mafatīy,al-Goyūb and Mīzān, both of which remain unpublished. The author, who is a well-known scholar, and has already published several articles on the contents of these two books and the views expressed in them, devotes the present paper to a listing of a number of words and phrases from the text of Mīzān (written in 821/1418) which he finds significant from a linguistic point of view. These include many obsolete or obsolescent usages which will be of interest to lexicographers. The author has used the MS of Mīzānin the Malek Library (No. 6226) for his research; another manuscript of this book is in the library attached to the Shrine of Hazrat 'Alī in Najaf, Iraq, but the author has had no access to it.
