Abstract

In this paper, the author delves into the question of standard language which he differentiates at the beginning from official language and lingua franca. After examining the various definitions which have been offered by linguists, Iranian or otherwise, for the term so far, he fine-tunes the definition to the following: "The standard language is a type of written or spoken language which has been accepted in society as the dominant linguistic pattern and is used by educated people and the upper classes of society." He then goes on to say that this standard language is used on formal occasions such as when teaching in schools, in the press, on radio and television and in the course of formal interviews and conversations. The standard language enjoys such a high degree of social prestige that it is adopted or imitated by many people and social groups in the country.Standard Persian is now, the author continues, the language written and spoken in the capital, Tehran, but it is not the local vernacular of old Tehranis. It has both its written and spoken forms, and the spoken Persian, with its so-called broken forms, which some linguists are averse to, is indeed a true form of the standard language. This language is not an absolute entity; it is relative. It is not fixed in time; it has evolved and it will continue to evolve. Some other characteristics of the standard language that the author enumerates are the following:- The language is not marked by identifiable local forms and usages.- It is free from obsolete elements.- It is compatible with the linguistic sense of contemporary speakers.- And finally, it is not burdened with an overdose of foreign loan-words.
