Abstract

The author contends in this paper that AboIfazl Beyhaqi (995-1077) has compiled his famous tārīk of the Ghaznavid period not as another conventional History but as a story. This does not mean, the author says, that he has fictionalized the events he chronicles. But Beyhaqī's concern for his readers and the readability of his account have led him to use some techniques that are commonly used by novelists today, such as narration, character development, the setting, and the prevailing atmosphere, dialogue, tone, viewpoint, etc. The author thinks what Beyhaqī has done is very close to the style of the Realist and Naturalist writers of the 20th century.
