Abstract

Introduction: Linguatulosis (LINGUATULA SERRATA contamination) is a ZOONOTIC disease that humans and ruminants such as cattle, sheep, goats, and camels as intermediate hosts and carnivores, especially DOGs in nature are its final hosts. Linguatula serrate or tongue parasites belong to Pentastomida sub-branche of the arthropods. The parasite in humans and other intermediate hosts cause relative severe side-effects. Therefore, appropriate information of repositories can control the infection and help us to eradicate it.Materials & Methods: on April 2009, this study has been conducted with a sampling of 32 stray and shepherd DOGs found in and around the industrial slaughterhouses of ILAM (western Iran). DOGs were painlessly killed using high doses of ether materials, (easy killing without pain); then, they were transfered to the clinic, affiliated to department of veterinary sciences of ILAM University. After revealing the DOGs age as well as separating the heads, we proceeded to make the cut along the longitudinal line of heads; then, the nasal cavities and conchea where investigated for LINGUATULA SERRATA parasites. The parasites were isolated in the laboratory were their sizes were measured and identified using light microscope, and the number and sexes (male or female) were recorded.Findings: Out of the total number of 32 DOGs, 13 were infested adult LINGUATULA SERRATA and each DOG had an average of 8 adult worms. In general, of all the 32 DOGs studied, 103 adult worms were isolated, of which 58% were female and 42% male worms. Of the 13 infested DOGs, 8 were shepherd and 5 stray DOGs.Discussion & Conclusion: This study shows that LINGUATULA SERRATA infestation is a parasitic disease in stray and shepherd DOGs in ILAM (western ILAM). Due to linguatulosis as a ZOONOTIC disease, different measures seem necessary for diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention in carnivores.
