Abstract

 IN THE PRESENT WORK, ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF TORBAT HEYDARIEE’S STEEL COMPLEX ON THE AIR QUALITY OF THE NEIGHBOR REGIONS WERE INVESTIGATED. ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AIR CONTAMINANT UNIT IN THE STEEL COMPLEX, WHERE ITS CONTAMINANTS CONTAIN CO, SO2, NO2 AND PARTICULAR MATTERS. THREE DIMENSIONAL CFD MODELING WAS USED TO PREDICT THE DISPERSION OF THESE CONTAMINANTS FROM STACK OF THE ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE. THE MODELING’S WERE CARRIED OUT FOR TWO CASES AND THE RESULTS WERE COMPARED TOGETHER. IN THE FIRST CASE IT WAS ASSUMED THAT THE EXHAUST GASES FROM THE FURNACE ARE VENTED TO THE ATMOSPHERE WITHOUT ANY REFINING. IN THE SECOND CASE, APPROPRIATE REFINING PROCESSES ARE EMPLOYED FOR REDUCING GAS AND SOLID CONTAMINANTS. THE RESULTS OF THE FIRST CASE SHOWED THE CONCENTRATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE IS LOWER THAN STANDARD ALLOWABLE LEVEL. HOWEVER, THE CONCENTRATIONS OF OTHER CONTAMINANTS ARE HIGHER THAN EPA ALLOWABLE LEVELS. FOR THE SECOND CASE, THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT BY EMPLOYING APPROPRIATE REFINING PROCESSES, THE CONCENTRATION OF PARTICULATE MATTER AND ALL OF THE GASEOUS CONTAMINANTS WILL BE LOWER THAN ALLOWABLE QUANTITIES.
