Abstract

 ATHEROSCLEROTIC DISEASE IS ONE OF THE MAJOR CAUSES OF DEATH IN THE WORLD. IN THIS SCENARIO, THE PROGRESSION OF PLAQUE IS BELIEVED TO LEAD TO SUDDEN DEATH DUE TO THE PLAQUE RUPTURE OR PLAQUE EROSION AND NOT NECESSARILY BECAUSE OF THE PLAQUE GROWTH. THIS EVENT CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE MECHANICAL FACTORS.INADEQUATE DATA ON PLAQUE PROPRIETIES AND MATERIALS IS ONE OF THE LIMITATIONS IN PLAQUE PATHOLOGY. USING MORE ACCURATE IMAGING TECHNIQUES OR PROCESSING OF DIFFERENT IMAGES CAN BE HELPFUL TO GET MORE DATA ABOUT LESION. STRESS ANALYSIS BASED ON PLAQUE COMPOSITION AND MORPHOLOGY AND DETERMINATION OF PEAK STRESS LOCATIONS (WHICH PROBABLY ARE RELATED TO THE PLAQUE FRACTURE LOCATIONS) ARE IMPORTANT. OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY (OCT) IS A GOOD DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING TECHNIQUE AND ACQUIRES IN-VIVO IMAGES WITH HIGH RESOLUTION. IN THIS STUDY STRESS DISTRIBUTION OF ATHEROSCLEROTIC CORONARY ARTERY IS EXAMINED BY USING FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS BASED ON A TWO-DIMENSIONAL OCT IMAGE OF A DISEASED ARTERY AND MEAN ARTERIAL PRESSURE.
