SORPTION BEHAVIOR AND MECHANISM OF THORIUM (IV) FROM NITRIC ACID SOLUTIONS BY RICE BRAN AND WHEAT BRAN

Abstract

 CURRENTLY IN THE INDUSTRY FOR PROCESSING AND REPROCESSING OF RADIONUCLIDES, DIFFERENT ACIDS WITH HIGH CONCENTRATION ARE REPEATEDLY APPLIED FOR DIGESTION OF RADIONUCLIDE-BEARING PRECIPITATION OBTAINED FROM LEACHING PROCESS. RADIONUCLIDES SEPARATION IS A CHALLENGING TASK BECAUSE OF HIGH ACIDIC MEDIA ASSOCIATED WITH IT (RAJU, AND SUBRAMANIAN, 2007). GIVEN THE INDUSTRIAL IMPORTANCE OF THORIUM SEPARATION FROM HIGHLY ACIDIC MEDIA, THE PRESENT WORK WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DECIPHER THE POSSIBLE MECHANISM AND CHEMICAL NATURE OF THORIUM ACCUMULATION FROM ACIDIC SOLUTIONS BY THE RICE BRAN AND WHEAT BRAN BIOMASS. THE MECHANISM OF RADIONUCLIDE–BIOMASS INTERACTION WAS ELUCIDATED BY EMPLOYING SEVERAL ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES SUCH AS ATTENUATED TOTAL REFLECTANCE FOURIER TRANSFORM INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY (ATR-FTIR), SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE ANALYSIS (SEM) AND ENERGY DISPERSIVE X-RAY SPECTROSCOPY (EDS). THE PRESENCE OF TH4+IONS ON THE BIOMASS SURFACE WAS OBVIOUSLY REVEALED IN SEM IMAGES AND EDS ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS. MOREOVER, THE LINKAGE OF C=O, O-H AND N-H FUNCTIONAL GROUPS ON THE BIOMASS SURFACE WITH TH4+IONS BECAME CLEAR WITH ATR-FTIR SPECTROSCOPY. FROM ALL THE RESULTS OBTAINED, IT CAN BE DEDUCED THAT THE ELECTROSTATIC COMPLEXATION MECHANISM IS PREDOMINANT BETWEEN RB FUNCTIONAL GROUPS AND TH4+IONS. IT SEEMS THAT BIOMOLECULES SUCH AS AMINO ACIDS, B-VITAMINS, PHOSPHOLIPIDS AND ORYZANOLS CONTAINING HARD FUNCTIONAL GROUPS PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN BIOSORPTION OF TH4+ IONS.
