Abstract

Background: The use of non-pharmacological methods of relieving NAUSEA longside antiemetic agents can reduce chemotherapy-induced NAUSEA and VOMITING. The present study was conducted to determine the effect of cardamom aromas on the cemotpy induced NAUSEA and VOMITING in cancer patients. Methods: The present clinical trial was conducted on 66 cancer patients reporting chemotherapy-induced NAUSEA at the hospital and clinic in 2014. Patients were randomly divided into a cardamom group and a placebo group. After submitting their formal consent, the patients were asked to take three deep breaths with either distilled water or cardamom pads twice with five-minute intervals. The patients’ severity of NAUSEA was measured before the intervention, after the first 3 breaths and then after the second 3 breaths. The frequency of NAUSEA, retching and VOMITING were evaluated in the acute phase of chemotherapy after the interventions.Result: At the beginning of the study, both groups were similar in terms of their demographic characteristics and the severity of NAUSEA. The severity of NAUSEA was significantly lower in the cardamom group than in the placebo group at the end of the interventions; and this difference was statistically significant (p<0.01). The patients' frequency of NAUSEA, retching and VOMITING was similar in both groups in the acute phase. There were no differences between the groups’ frequency of NAUSEA, retching and VOMITING based on gender and the degree of chemotherapy emetogenicity. Conclusion: Cardamom essential oil inhalation aromatherapy is recommended for decreasing the severity of chemotherapy-induced NAUSEA in cancer patients.
