EXERGETIC PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT OF A LOW ROTATIONAL SPEED WIND TURBINE

Abstract

 IN THE LAST DECADE, A NUMBER OF STUDIES ON THE EFFICIENT UTILIZATION OF WIND TURBINES HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED BY VARIOUS RESEARCHERS TO IMPROVE SYSTEMS PERFORMANCE. HOWEVER, MOST OF THEM JUST INCLUDED THEIR ENERGETIC ASPECTS AND THE NUMBER OF STUDIES CARRIED OUT THEIR EXERGETIC DIRECTIONS IS RELATIVELY VERY LOW. IN THIS PAPER, THE PERFORMANCE OF A SAVONIUS TYPE VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE IS ASSESSED THERMODYNAMICALLY, FROM RESOURCE AND TECHNOLOGY PERSPECTIVES BASED ON EXPERIMENTS AND METEOROLOGICAL DATA RECORDED IN KARAJ, IRAN. THE THERMODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF WIND THROUGH ENERGY AND EXERGY ANALYSES ARE CONSIDERED AND BOTH ENERGETIC AND EXERGETIC EFFICIENCIES ARE STUDIED. BESIDES, POTENTIAL OF WIND POWER GENERATION IN THE AREA HAS BEEN COMPUTED THROUGH WEIBULL STATISTICAL DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION METHOD. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT ENERGY AND EXERGY EFFICIENCIES OF STUDIED SYSTEM VARIED IN RANGE OF 0-30% AND 0-37%, RESPECTIVELY. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE EXERGY METHOD PROVIDES UNIQUE INSIGHT BEYOND AN ENERGY ANALYSIS, THEREFORE PROVIDING A USEFUL DESIGN TOOL FOR WIND ENERGY DEVELOPMENT.
