Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to develop a causal model of selfharming behaviors based on attachment styles and maladaptive schemas in students. Materials and Methods: The research method in this study was correlational. The statistical population in this study was all high school students in West Azerbaijan province in the academic year of 1997-98. In this study, 214 people (99 girls and 115 boys) were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling method. The self-harm questionnaire, the Collins-Reed attachment questionnaire, and the Young Yang early incompatible schemas questionnaire were used to collect data, and the Pearson correlation coefficient and path analysis methods were used to analyze the data. Results: The results of path analysis showed that attachment styles and early maladaptive schemas have a positive and direct effect on self-harming behavior. Conclusion: These findings have important implications in the treatment and prevention of self-harming behaviors and can be predicted by identifying attachment styles and maladaptive schemas, vulnerability to self-harming behaviors in them.
