Title

THE CAUSES OF DEATH IN BIRJAND UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (BUMS)

Abstract

 Background and Aim: Evaluation of the common causes of death in a community and comparing with other countries is important and can help to promote health. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the figure of death in BUMS 2003-2004 based on ICD10. Materials and Methods: This descriptive- analytic study, was conducted on all death gathered from death registry system in BUMS at 2003-2004. The data was categorized according to ICD-10 and analyzed by t-test. Results: In 2003-2004, from 2148 registered death, 517 (24.1%) were caused by cardiovascular diseases with mean age of 67.9 year. In this group, stroke and myocardial infarction were the most common causes of death. The lost years of ages were 14.5% due to cardiac diseases. In this year, 267 cases of death (18.71%) were caused by unintentional accidents with mean age 35.4 years. A great number of which resulted from car accidents. The highest lost years were resulted from this death. In this year, cancers and tumors with 146 cases (5.7%) were the third common death causes. Liver and bile cancer (11.6%), Bronchogenic cancer (11.6%) and stomach cancer (10.3%) were the most common cause of death, respectively. The mean death age was 58.2. Conclusion: The most common causes of death were cardiovascular, accidents and cancers and these are preventable by proper intervention in life style, nutritional habits, controlling risk factors (smoking, obesity, stress, …). So, it can be hoped that in future we would be able to prevent premature death.
