The effect of cognitive and personality factors on drivers' risky behaviors

Abstract

 Cognitive, psychomotor and personality factors are effective in the occurrence of risky behaviors of drivers. Given that these behaviors have different types; it is not clear which type is most affected by which factors. The present study was to investigate the effects of cognitive and psychomotor factors namely motor agility, motor coordination, accuracy, mechanical aptitude, distraction, fatigue, attention, and personality factors namely sensation seeking, type A behavioral pattern, openness to feelings, and aggression on three types of risky behaviors includes Errors, lapses and Deliberate violations. The sample consisted of 440 drivers of Isfahan city who were selected by convenience sampling method and responded to the research tools include Driving Behavior Questionnaire, Distraction Scale from MMPI Personality Test, Accuracy and Coordination Tests from Flangang Test, DAT Test, Ahwaz Aggression Inventory, Zuckerman Sensation-seeking Scale, short form of Jangins Activity Scale, Chalder Fatigue Scale, and selective attention task. The findings showed that cognitive and psycho-motor factors, namely mechanical aptitude, distraction, and fatigue through attention, and motor agility, motor coordination, and accuracy through risk-taking create Errors and lapses (p=0. 01). But in Deliberate violations, the effect of personality factors such as sensation seeking, openness to feelings and type A behavior patterns through anger is more important The results showed that different factors are involved in drivers' risky behaviors(p=0. 01). Accordingly, different methods can be used to prevent and reduce any of the risky driving behaviors. Reduces Errors and lapses by improving cognitive and psycho-motor abilities and with personality interventions, the amount of Deliberate violations is reduced.
