Abstract

This article discusses the problems of poetry translation concerning multiplicity of meaning, integration of content and form in poetic discourse, rhythm and rhyme, and musicality of poetic language. It assumes that poetry translation, i.e. a type of literary translation, is radically different from technical and even rhythmical PROSE TRANSLATION.In technical translation- the purpose of which is communicating information in the most intelligible and fluent manner - the focus is on conveying the content, whereas in poetry translation the significance of form is not any less than, if not more than, content. In prose, the connection between form and content is rather loose compared to poetry. But in poetic language the form and content are highly interconnected and the total meaning of a piece of poetry is the result of the interaction of form and content. In translating prose, it is not difficult to separate the content of the original text from its form and cast it into a different prose form in the target language, but separating the content of poetry from its form is very difficult and causes much to be lost in translation.
