Effectiveness of the Emotion-regulation Group Therapy on Symptom Recovery and Quality of Life of Panic Disordered Patients

Abstract

 Introduction: Emotion-regulation Therapy (ERT) as a multifaceted and integrated treatment is widely used in treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of emotion-regulation group therapy on symptom recovery and quality of life in Panic disordered patients. Method: A randomized controlled trial design was chosen. Population of the study was patients diagnosed with Panic disorder in 2019 who referred to psychiatry clinics of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. A total sample consisting 22 Panic disorder patients selected and randomly divided to experimental and control groups. Subjects for both group were assessed in pre-post-test periods using Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5, Anxiety and Related Disorders Interview Schedule and the WHO quality of life questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of covariance. Results: results showed significantly increased mean scores (p<0. 05) for experimental group subjects on all aspects anxiety, and 3 aspects of quality of life (physical, psychological and environmental) rather than control group. Conclusion: Group emotion-regulationt therapy which includes changing the underlying constructs of worry and emotion regulation, could improve the symptoms and quality of life in Panic disordered patients.
