Abstract

One of the most important issues in TRANSLATION is the application of tools that facilitate this process. In this paper, efforts have been made to investigate the effects of application of mobile dictionaries on the performance of English news translators with a descriptive- experimental approach. This study is comprised of two separate phases. In the first phase of the project a questionnaire was given to 100 Iranian translators in five Iranian state universities to investigate the type of monolingual dictionaries they use while translating informative texts. In the main phase of the study, three groups of translators, each comprised of 5 translators, with different types of dictionaries- hardcover, computer software, and mobile dictionaries- were selected. They were given the task of translating three news texts from English to Persian, and their TRANSLATIONs were assessed in terms of the ACCURACY of the words and expressions of the source text and the SPEED of the job. Results of the first phase of the study showed that most of the translators participated in this study use printed dictionaries. However, results of the second phase of the study showed that translators using mobile dictionaries rendered the texts more accurately and much faster than the other two groups. This study showed that mobile dictionaries can be suitable and easy tools for news translators.
