Abstract

Background: SHIGELLOSIS that is also known as "bacillary dysentery", is an infectious disease caused by a group of bacteria called Shigella. This disease is more severe than other forms of gastroenteritis. Several factors contribute to making Shigella as a biological agent.Materials and methods: In our research, different aspects of EPIDEMIOLOGy of SHIGELLOSIS such as species distribution, antimicrobial resistance patterns, transmission, and mortality rates, were studied using standard bacteriological methods during a one year period in Tehran. Moreover we reviewed other published document about significance of Shigella as a biological agent.Results: We studied endemic cases of SHIGELLOSIS during a one year period. Results of this study shows and emphasizes important aspects such as transmission, multi drug resistance and mortality rate of disease caused by Shigella.Conclusion: SHIGELLOSIS can be a threat to public health. Since deliberate use of Shigella bacteria has been recently documented in several outbreaks, special attention should be considered to SHIGELLOSIS as a bio-threat to public health.
