RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MARITAL SATISFACTION AND DEMOGRAPHICS VARIABLES IN POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION (PPD), ASTARA, 2007

Abstract

MARITAL SATISFACTION is a process that is made during the couple's life. It contains 4 domains: attraction (body, sex), understanding, view and investment. MARITAL SATISFACTION is affected by pregnancy and child’s birth. This process has affects on children, couple and family health. Therefore mother want more support and of her husband. This research was conducted to determine the relationship between MARITAL SATISFACTION and POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION with demographic variables in women attended at the Shahid Mohammadzadeh health and two related health posts in Astara in 2007.This research is a descriptive and analytical study in which 120 women in POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION, who had eligible, were sampled through a purposive method and filled the MARITAL SATISFACTION and PPD was assessed by Edinburg Postnatal Depression scale until 6 months of postpartum. Data was analyzed using Chi-square, Man Whitney, student t-test.The rate of POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION was 0.25 in our study. Material satisfaction was in a significant correlation with postpartum in 15th (r= -0.56, p<0.0001) and 30th (r= -0.50, p< 0.0001) days postpartum. Mean of MARITAL SATISFACTION scores in non-depressed women was significantly than depressed women (172.09±13.45 vs. 150.36±22.64, p<0.0001) and social support was in a significant correlation with details of material satisfaction in the case of attraction, understanding and investment but social support was not significant with PPD.Low MARITAL SATISFACTION is a risk factor POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION. Identifying any problem related to MARITAL SATISFACTION in pregnancy and providing proper interventions may reduce the rate of PPD. providing mental health services and training health workers in identifying and preventing of PPD is suggested.
