Introduction: Allergic and irritant compounds are frequent in nature, and the environmental allergic factors which can induce or exacerbate eczema are different and often unknown in different areas. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of contact dermatitis in patients with chronic dermatitis referring to dermatology clinics in kerman. Methods: In this descriptive study, standard patch test containing 24 allergens was done for 156 cases (56 males and 69 females) with confirmed chronic dermatitis who had been referred to Afzalipoor Hospital Dermatology Clinics. Evaluation of the results was done for every case 24, 48 and 72 hours after application of the patch test. Results: In whole, 153 positive patch tests were seen in 66 (52.8%) cases of 125 patients who had been examined. The most common allergic agent was nickel sulfate detected in 20 (13.1%) patients (17 females and 3 males). The hypersensitivity reaction to this agent was significantly more common in females than males (P<0.05). Potassium dichromate with frequency of 11.1% (12 males and 5 females) was the second common allergic agent and males showed significantly more positive reaction to this agent than females (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference according to the age and sex between groups with positive and negative patch test results (P>0.05).Conclusion: As the causative agents of contact dermatitis are different in various areas, by doing patch test in each area the allergic agents can be detected for more appropriate preventive measures and treatment strategies. In this study, the first and second common allergens were respectively Nickel and Chrome compounds. Thiorum, Cobalt, benzocaine and theazolin compounds were in the third rank.

Introduction: Ionic channel rearrangements through the demyelinated axons or supporting media play significant role in remission of the neurological deficit in MS patients. In this study the effects of Verapamil as a calcium channel blocker on central conduction have been investigated through the evaluation of changes in P100 latency of the visual evoked potential.Method: This randomized double blinded, placebo-controlled, clinical trial was performed on two groups of 20 multiple sclerosis patients who had been diagnosed for definite MS and had no relapse during the last year. Case group received oral Verapamil, 40 mg, every 8 hours and was compared to Placebo group for changes in P100 latency. Results: In the Verapamil group, the P100 latencies showed an average decrease of 5ms comparing to the placebo group (6.1±4ms vs1 ± 0.5 ms). Verapamil had no significant effect on the VEP duration.Discussion: The present study suggests that pharmacological manipulation of calcium-dependent process, possibly at the level of demyelinated axon, can acutely facilitate central conduction of electrical impulses in some patients with clinically stable multiple sclerosis.

Abstract:

Introduction: Inflammatory joint diseases are common in elderly, and regulation of joint blood flow (JBF) is important in these conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of inflamed joint blood vessels to angiotensin P (Ang P), a vasoconstrictor factor which has been shown to be produced in inflamed joints locally. Identification of Ang P receptor subtypes in joint blood vessels was the second goal of this study. Methods: The present study was performed on 12 Newzland white rabbits. Acute knee joint inflammation was produced by intraarticular injection of 0.5 ml of a 2% of carrageenan solution 24 hours before the experiment. On experiment day, animals were anaesthetized by thiopental sodium (50mg/kg ip) and carotid artery was cannulated for recording blood pressure. JBF was recorded by laser Doppler flow meter. Joint vascular resistance (JVR) was calculated by dividing arterial blood pressure by JBF.Results: Based on Ang P dose/ response curve of joint blood vessels, the constrictor response was started from 10-12 M and reached to maximum at 10-5 M. Losartan completely inhibited this response with no vasodilation left behind, therefore the receptor subtypes are AT1. No evidence of presence of AT2 receptor subtype was observed in joint blood vessels. Conclusion: The comparison of the results of this study with a previous study on normal joints showed that the Ang P receptor subtypes did not change due to the process of acute inflammation.

Abstract:

Introduction: Most periodontal treatments aim to reduce probing depths and maintaining or improving attachment. One of these techniques for treatment of intrabony defects is guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The aim of this study was to compare one-wall intrabony defects treatment with GTR and flap debridement alone. Methods: Eight patients aged 32-43 years participated in this randomized controlled clinical trial. In the test side, a collagen membrane was used after flap/debridement but in the control side, only flap/debridement was performed. Clinical treatment outcomes were evaluated 6 months after surgery. Paired t-test was used for analyzing the data. Results: A mean reduction in pocket depth value of 5.5 mm and mean bone fill of 2.75 mm  occurred in the test group. A mean reduction in pocket depth value of 5.7 mm and mean bone fill of 1.5 mm occurred in the control group. The difference between the two treatments was statistically significant in terms of bone fill (P = 0.01) and reduction in hemiseptal defect depth (P = 0.00). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study using barrier membranes produced better clinical parameters of one-wall intrabony defects and proved to be superior to access flap alone.

Abstract:

Introduction: Mummy was used in traditional medicine as a remedy for inflammation, articular injuries, rheumatism, bone fractures, wounds, and back pains. In a previous research, the healing effects of mummy on rabbit’s tibial fracture were studied and the results approved its efficacy.Considering some natives’ claim and suggestions of traditional medicine in regard to the effectiveness of mummy on wound healing, the present study was aimed to investigate the effects of mummy on some healing indices of wound.Method: In this experimental study performed on 56 mice, a vertical incision on the back of mice cutting through the complete thickness of skin was performed. The test groups (mummy), and the control groups (normal saline), were compared for some tissue indices of wound healing and the amount of tension needed to tear the cut by using the tensiometer after 3,7,14 , and 21 days. Results: Although the average tissue indices of wound healing differed in test and control groups, these differences were not statistically significant. The average of the tensions needed to tear the healed wound in test groups was significantly greater than that in the control groups. Conclusion: The difference between mean number of histological variables and mean necessary tension to tear open the healed wound between the test and control groups indicated the effectiveness of mummy in tensile stretch of wound healing process but its negligible effectiveness on histological indices of wound healing.

Abstract:

Introduction: Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) or Human Herpes Virus Type-5(HHV-5) is a member of herpesviridae placed in subtype beta herpesvirinae. CMV is a ubiquitous pathogenic virus and can infect humans all through their life. Prevalence of CMV infection in developed countries is about 45% and in developing countries it varies up to 100%. CMV infection during pregnancy is very important, because it can threat life of both mother and her fetus,_ and it can cause congenital defects. Maternal infection is a determining factor in neonatal infection. The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence rate of CMV infection as well as the relationship between underlying factors of this infection in women and their neonates in Kerman. Methods: ELISA technique and Diagnostic Kits (EIA WELL, Rome, Italy) were used to determine the seroprevalence of 794 samples (397 maternal, 397 neonatal) collected from 5 delivery centers in Kerman. Results: The frequency distributions of maternal primary infection, secondary infection, immune mothers and seronegative cases were respectively 0.76% (3 cases), 32.24% (128 cases), 59.7% (237 cases) and 7.3% (29 cases). Seroprevalence rate for CMV-IgG and CMV-IgM of mothers were respectively, 33.8% (134 cases) and 91.94% (365 cases). No significant relationship was found between CMV infection and factors of mother’s age and occupation, husband’s occupation, number of children, parity, family income, previous history of abortion, pervious history of blood transfusion and organ transplant, febrile disease during pregnancy and place of residency; however, mother’s educational level showed a significant relation (P=0.38).Conclusion: Due to high prevalence rate of CMV found in this study, further studies about the diagnosis, epidemiology and detection of CMV primary infections in mothers and their neonates, are highly recommended.

Abstract:

Introduction: Emotional intelligence as an aspect of social intelligence determines the individual’s ability in encountering with psychic pressures and adopting with them. Based on previous studies deficiency of emotional intelligence has a relation with disruptive behaviors in adolescents. The purpose of this research was to find the relationship between behavioral disorders and emotional intelligence (Emotional Intelligence Quotient: EQ) in secondary school students in Tehran City.Method: In whole, 420 students (195 boys and 225 girls) from six high schools in three city areas (1, 6, 16) selected randomly. Subjects were asked to complete SDQ and SSRI scales. Ultimately, data from 420 students were analyzed with Pearson correlation and Multiple Regression. Results: EQ and it's components, that is mean regulation of emotion, appraisal and expression of emotion and utilization of emotions, showed negative relationship with behavioral disorders (respectively r=-0.27, r=- 0.29, r=-0.17, r=-0.24 and p<0.001). In addition, results suggested that general EQ (Beta=-0.275, p<0.000) and one of it's component's, that is regulation of emotion (Beta=-0.293, p<0.000) can predict significantly behavioral disorders. Conclusion: The role of EQ in shaping behavioral disorders has some important implications especially for professionals in the field of behavioral disorders. For example considering EQ improvement programs in preventing and treating behavioral disorders is necessary.

Abstract:

Introduction: Attention Deficit Hyeperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a relatively prevalent disorder in children and is associated with some other disorders including depression. This problem also affects the emotional characteristics and intelligence quotient. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of Emotional Characteristics (EC) and depression with Intelligence Quotient (IQ) in children with ADHD.Method: Fifty six children with ADHD and fifty six normal children matched for age and sex were selected. To determine EC, depression and IQ, the Bender – Gestalt test, Children Depression Scale, and the Raven Progressive Matrices were administered respectively. Results: There was a positive significant correlation between EC and IQ (P<0.01), depression and IQ (P<0.01). According to 2-variable regression analysis the regression for IQ on EC and depression was significant (P<0.01).The R2 quotient showed that nearly 41% of the IQ score was accounted for by two other independent variables of which the role of EC was 32%. Also, the results of the regression analysis indicated that the addition of a depression variable to the regression equation only increases the prediction power by 9% and among the mentioned variables, EC was the best predicators of IQ in ADHD children. Finally a t test showed a significant difference between the studied variables in ADHD and normal groups (P<0.01).Conclusion: Considering the high correlation between EC and IQ as well as the significant difference between the children with ADHD and normal children, monitoring of EC has an important role in increasing the affected children's IQ.

Abstract:

The main cause of decreased mouth opening in patients suffered from trauma is bony or fibrous ankylosis of temporomandibular joint, but other causes such as fibrous or bony union of zygoma and / or maxilla to the coronoid process of the mandible must be considered in preoperative management of such cases. Bony union of the mandible to the maxilla and zygoma is rare. In this report, one case, a victim of earthquake (Bam city, December 2002) with the diagnosis of traumatic maxillomandibular fusion and the performed therapeutic procedure are described.
