Title

USING OF MOISTURE TERM IN THE DYNAMIC MODELING IN TREATMENT PROCESS OF HEXANE- CONTAMINATED AIR

Abstract

Introduction: An effective method for biological treatment of contaminated air to organic volatilization compounds is the BIOFILTRATION method, which the pollutant substance is transmitted by air passing through the gas phase to the biofilm phase and decomposed by microorganisms. The activity of microbial degradation is strongly influenced by the MOISTURE CONTENT of the bed, which is the most important factor in controlling the optimal BIOFILTRATION performance. The purpose of this study is to use a term of moisture to describe the function of a model in an unstable biofilter to remove HEXANE from the contaminated air stream. Methods: Firstly, a two-dimensional dynamic model of BIOFILTRATION is presented for HEXANE contaminated air which terms of MOISTURE CONTENT and axial dispersion are considered in mass transfer equations. The effects of WATER SUPER ADSORBENT including continuous increasing in the bed porosity and specific surface area were entered into the equations. The equations were discretized by Finite Volume Method for solving numerically. Then, BIOFILTRATION experiments were done in flow rate of 0.7 L/min and inlet concentration of 2 g/m3 to determine the accuracy of model predictions. Results: The model could present a pattern of decline in MOISTURE CONTENT of the bed after moistening stop. Experimental data were well predicted the increasing of pollutant outlet concentration because of reduction of bed moisture by the model (SE=0.45%) and an estimation of end point was presented for the system. Conclusion: The modeling results indicated that consideration of MOISTURE CONTENT term under unsteady state conditions can develop the model performance and describe BIOFILTRATION process with all its complexities.
