Pages

  30-39

Abstract

Background and Aims: MEDICATION ERRORS are considered as serious and the most frequent worldwide medical errors threatening patient’s safety and mayeven lead to their death. The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of MEDICATION ERRORS and providing counterstrategies to NURSEs and NURSING STUDENTS.Materials and Methods: This descriptive – analytical study was conducted on 327 nursing staff of Khatam-al-Anbia Hospital and 62 intern students in faculty of nursing and midwifery in Zahedan, Iran. The enrollment was based on census in 2015. A valid and reliable questionnaire was applied to collect data. Descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA using SPSS16, on the other hand, were applied to analyze the data. Results: The results showed that the most common cause of MEDICATION ERRORS of NURSEs was fatigue due to increased workload (97.8%), and the most common one for NURSING STUDENTS was calculation errors (77.4%).Conclusion: Considering the results, it is recommended that NURSE-managers sort out the human resource problems. Providing in-service workshops and educations about preparing medications, side effects of drugs and pharmacological knowledge and using electronic medication cards could also result in medication error reduction.
