Abstract

Dry ports are intermodal inland terminals which have established in several countries. In the most of them there are direct and shuttle rail connections between them and one or more seaports. A wide range of all services which performed in seaports can present in dry ports such as custom clearance, storage, container stripping and stuffing, forwarding, container repair and maintenance and so on. Dry ports also act as important nodes for attracting and distributing of cargo especially containers. Regarding to general structure of dry ports in various countries, they improve and develop intermodal or multimodal transportation. In this paper, after a brief history of dry ports, intermodal transportation and containerization are investigated based on expert's point of view via questionnaires on the most important characteristics of feasibility of establishing dry ports. Finally, this analytic and comparative study is performed by means of yearly information and statistics of Iran.
