Abstract

The purpose of this empirical research is to study factors affecting social capital in an Iranian distance education university; Payame Noor university (PNU). The social capital theories of Bourdieu, Colman and Putnam and network theories of Graneutter, Burt and Lin were examined and based on Nahapiet and Ghoshal model of social capital (1998), the research hypotheses were formulated. The relational, contextual and structural variables of social capital were studied in an extensive survey and a handful of data collection methods involving 146 faculty members of PNU. Based on the findings of the study a comprehensive model is presented to promote the social capital of Iranian state and private universities.
