Abstract

Introduction: Given the increasing number of obese patients worldwide, the economic costs and financial damages resulting from obesity, changing dietary behaviors, and cognitive patterns in overweight individuals seem essential. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on body image, attitude towards Eating, and food cravings in overweight individuals.
Methods: The current research design was semi-experimental with pre-test-post-test with a control group and follow-up period. The statistical population included all attendees of weight loss clinics in Isfahan city from 2021 to 2022, and the research sample consisted of 45 obese individuals selected purposefully based on entry and exit criteria. They completed body image, eating attitudes, and food craving questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using repeated measures analysis of variance and SPSS-23 software.
Results: The results indicated that both cognitive-behavioral therapies and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy were effective in improving body image, eating attitudes, and food cravings, with no significant difference between them. Furthermore, during the follow-up stage, the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy on body image and food cravings were found to be more sustainable compared to mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (p < 0.01).
Conclusions: Based on the findings of the research, it can be said that cognitive-behavioral therapies and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy focus on increasing awareness of behavioral patterns, triggering factors, and negative cognitive factors that may lead to eating disorders. Therefore, individuals can enhance the skills needed to cope with food cravings and modify ineffective cognitive and behavioral patterns based on these therapeutic approaches.
