Abstract

Despite various programs, the newly generated employment opportunities do not meet the labour demand of Iran’s economy, so that a large proportion of Iran’s active labour is among the employment seeking groups. This study intends to explore the capacity of the industrial subcategories of Iran’s economy with regard to their roles in generating employment and finally to identify the KEY SECTORS of the economy in 2000.The various industrial subcategories due to their massive relations and direct and indirect effects on the other sectors, would have a considerable function in creating employment opportunities.Using the latest input-output table of the year 2000, a merged- 30 sectors- table has been arranged to calculate and order different indexes such as forward and BACKWARD LINKAGEs, the power of dispersion and the sensitivity of dispersion and the elasticity of employment.The results reveal that the following sectors are among the pioneer sectors in generating employment Manufacture of earring apparel; dressing and dyeing of fur (code18), Manufacture Manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials (code 20), Manufacture of furniture; manufacturing NEC (code 36), Training and dressing of leather; manufacture of luggage, handbags, saddler, harness and footwear (code19), Agriculture (code1, 2, 5), Construction (code45), Manufacture of food products and beverages and tobacco (code15, 16), Manufacture of textiles (code17), Manufacture of office, accounting and computing machinery (code30), Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (code 24).Also, the following sectors show the highest impact of indirect employment generation: Manufacture of food products and beverages and tobacco (code 15, 16), Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (code 24), Manufacture of office, accounting and computing machinery (code30), Manufacture of wearing apparel; dressing and dyeing of fur (code18), Manufacture Manufacture of paper and paper products (code 21), Manufacture of furniture; manufacturing NEC (code 36), Manufacture Manufacture of basic iron and metal (code 2710), Manufacture Manufacture of electrical machinery and apparatus NEC (code 31).Regarding the backward and FORWARD LINKAGEs, manufacturing of coke, refined petroleum products (code 23) pull and push the least effects in their relation with other sectors.
