EFFECT OF EDUCATION ABOUT BRAIN DEATH AND ORGAN DONATION ON ATTITUDE AND KNOWLEDGE OF NURSING STUDENTS

Abstract

 Aims: Nowadays nurses are involved in cases of BRAIN DEATH and ORGAN DONATION and they play a critical role confronting such cases. Data provided by nurses can increase ORGAN DONATION rate if they have enough information on the subject. This study was designed to determine the effect of training about BRAIN DEATH and ORGAN DONATION on NURSING STUDENTS ATTITUDE and KNOWLEDGE. Methods: This quasi-experimental before-after study was performed on NURSING STUDENTS of selected universities of medical sciences in Tehran. Sample size was 147 (72 cases and 75 controls) who were selected with purposive sampling. Data was collected by a researcher-designed questionnaire including demography, ATTITUDE and KNOWLEDGE questions. Its validity was determined by content validity method and its reliability by test/retest and Cronbach’s alpha. Data was analyzed by SPSS 15 using paired and independent T and Chi-square tests. Results: The ATTITUDE (p=0.18) and KNOWLEDGE (p=0.71) of NURSING STUDENTS in two groups did not differ significantly before training. Education group students had a significant improvement in ATTITUDE (p=0.02) and KNOWLEDGE (p=0.001) after training compared to the control group. Conclusion: Considering the effect of training on NURSING STUDENTS ATTITUDE towards BRAIN DEATH and ORGAN DONATION, it seems necessary to make changes in nursing curriculum in Iran.
