Abstract

GABA neurotransmitter and GABAergic system play an important role in brain health and physiology. There are many studies about the disturbance in this system and its relation with brain diseases. Most of the studies have investigated the role of the neurotransmitter GABA, its receptors and transporters, but there are not enough studies about the role of GABA-synthesizing enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), which has two isoforms, GAD-65 and GAD-67. Since drugs that target enzymes, unlike receptors, do not undergo the phenomenon of desensitization or, in other words, drug resistance, therefore, if these enzymes are involved in the pathophysiology of brain diseases, they can be used as new and effective therapeutic approaches. Therefore, in this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the role of GABA- synthesizing enzymes in some common brain diseases.
