Scientific Mapping of Ethical Purchasing and Consumption Studies: Evolutionary Trends and Emergent Issues during the Last Quarter Century

Abstract

 Background and Aim: In recent years, many scientific efforts have been conducted to understand the concept of ethical consumption and its antecedents and consequences. Therefore, a complete review of this research area seems important and necessary. The present study was carried out with the aim of systematic review of researches in the field of ethical purchase and consumption, analysis of current research trends and discovery of future emerging research topics.

Methods: In this study, a systematic review and bibliographic analysis of researches in the field of ethical purchasing and consumption during the years 2000 to 2024 is conducted. For this purpose, after formulating the search strategy and the inclusion and exclusion criteria, two main databases of indexing of scientific publications (WOS and Scopus) were used for collection and Bibliometrix and VOSviewer software packages were used for data analysis and visualization.

Ethical Considerations: In compiling this research, ethical aspects, including preserving the originality of the texts, honesty, integrity, have been respected.

Results: A total of 1136 relevant and distinct research articles were retrieved in the field of ethical buying and consumption. The annual growth trend of research in this field until the end of 2024 is equal to 9.16, which indicates the growing acceptance of researchers in this topic. The results of the analysis of key words indicate that although the concept of ethical consumption includes several definitions, many researches emphasize fair trade with emphasis on the rights of all living beings (including humans, animals and the planet). Also, the results showed that the expansion of the concept of ethical consumption is more in the fashion industry (with emphasis on ethical and sustainable fashion) and food industry (with emphasis on organic, vegetarian and local food).

Conclusion: In general, occurrence themes such as “sustainability”, “sustainable development”, “sustainable consumption”, “green consumption”, “environmental attitude”, “consumption”, “anti-consumption”, “sustainable fashion” and “Green Marketing”, in the retrieved studies, indicates that the main goal of ethical consumption is sustainability and environmental protection, and this approach is considered a strategy for the formation of a responsible and sustainable economy.
