Pages

  1-11

Abstract

Background and Aim: Investigating the influencing factors and ways to improve interest in school and academic success is one of the most important and basic activities in any educational system, so the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of teaching ethics in school interest and academic success of students.

Methods: The research method was a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test along with a control group. The research population included all 10th grade female high school students in one district of Karaj in the academic year of 2023-2024, 30 of whom were randomly selected by available sampling and placed in two experimental and control groups. The tools for collecting information were questionnaires of interest in school by Bahari et al. (2021) and academic success by Salehi et al. (2013). During 8 weeks, a 90-minute session was held every week for the experimental group, but the control group did not receive any training during this period. SPSS version 22 software and multivariate covariance analysis were used in data analysis.

Ethical Considerations: The consent form and assurance of confidentiality were provided to the participants. They were also informed that participation in the sessions was voluntary and that they could withdraw at any time if they wished.

Results: The findings indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in school interest and academic success. The mean and standard deviation of school interest in the experimental group before and after the intervention were 68.46 ± 7.03 and 60.35 ± 7.27, respectively. Similarly, the mean and standard deviation of academic success before and after the intervention were 58.40 ± 4.22 and 53.13 ± 4.54, respectively. The effect size for school interest components was as follows: participation in school activities (1.28%), commitment to school (2.26%), sense of belonging to school (7.24%), and academic success (0.233%) (P < 0.001).

Conclusion: Based on the study findings, it is recommended that teachers and educational policymakers incorporate ethical education in academic programs to enhance students' school interest and academic achievement.
