Title

Virtual Space and Gender in the Measure of Postmodern Discrimination with Emphasis on Women

Pages

  1-14

Abstract

Background and Aim: The virtual space is not as free and democratic as it should be, and this lack of freedom has been particularly reversed in the case of women and children. Although freedom of expression is protected under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in many parts of the world, women are unable to exercise this right without fear. This is due either to discriminatory practices by governments and societies or to the inability of states to enhance access to resources and support for girls and women at various levels, both of which act as significant barriers.

Methods: This research adopts an analytical and descriptive approach grounded in library-based data to address the fundamental question of whether women enjoy equal rights with men in virtual spaces. In cases where such equality and safety in cyberspace are absent, the study further explores the specific forms of discrimination that are imposed upon and experienced by women.

Ethical Considerations: In the preparation of this article, ethical considerations including the preservation of textual authenticity, honesty, and fidelity have been duly observed.

Results: The findings of this study indicate that despite the strong potential capacities of virtual space to promote gender equality, it still follows the path of gender-based discrimination due to the persistence of male-centered gender stereotypes and the dominance of historically patriarchal ideologies in society. As a result, cyberspace has also become a site for gendered bias, and violence against women continues to exist in the form of “silent” or “covert” violence. Nevertheless, in recent years, significant support for women has been provided in developed and democratic states.

Conclusion: In order to combat discrimination against women in virtual spaces, new technologies must be recognized as a specific means of empowerment within the functional domain for women. The use of information and communication technologies to advance gender equality and empower women is not only vital for women, girls, and even children, but is also increasingly essential for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
