THE FOUNDATION OF DIDACTICS FOR KINGS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF FERDOWSI’S BIOGRAPHY

Abstract

 The diversity of didactic categories, the eloquence and richness of didactic discussions, and various forms of teaching pervasive in explicit and implicit layers of the Shahnameh of Ferdowsi are so conspicuous that it would not be exaggerating to call it a didactic work. The Shahnameh is the most prolific and the oldest heir of advices of ancient Iran in the lifestyle of princes, and in several senses lays the foundations for edifying kings, persuading them to be good-mannered, opt for good name, and warning them against evil, corruption and ill repute. This work establishes, in its text, the basis for teaching those at the helm of power, and moreover, the biography constructed for its author resembles the didactic basis of the text and counts as a hermeneutic analysis or interpretation to it. The constructed life of Ferdowsi recounted in later texts is the product of a DIALOGUE between texts and the Shahnameh after Ferdowsi, and has the same elements of edifying the ruler, and also shows its process of gaining historical notoriety. Both the Shahnameh and Ferdowsi’s constructed biography have been the source of didactic texts, and the moralistic discourse of history is shaped by DIALOGUE among the Shahnameh, its author’s life, and other didactic texts.
