Abstract

The aim of this survey was to study the BARRIERS to SCIENCE PRODUCTION from the viewpoint of SHAHID BEHESHTI UNIVERSITY faculty members in the academic year 1389-90. The study population included all the university professors (n= 546). A sample of 226 professors was selected through stratified random sampling. Data was collected employing a researcher-develped questionnaire with 29 five-point Likert scale items tapping into four components (obstacles) with a reliability of 0.93. One-sample t-test and Friedman test results suggested that cultural-social, communication, educational and personal obstacles had a great impact on the SCIENCE PRODUCTION from the respondents' viewpoint. Further, it was found that words rather than action in attracting and keeping the elite, a lack of coherent and structured relationship among universities and research centers, mere transmission of knowledge rather than promoting creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, predominance of quantity-oriented approaches and insufficient attention to the quality of research activities were identified as the most significant items of the obstacle components.
