Abstract

This article is a comparative study of several versions of the English tale of “Jack and the Beanstalk” with a Persian adaptation of the tale staged in Iran in 1979. Comparisons indicate that there are differences in the way the themes of ownership and PROPERTY-sharing have been depicted in the Persian and English versions. The authors believe that this is a reflection of the socio-political conditions of Iran during the 1970s-80s. Therefore, the second part of the article is concerned with how such conditions have influenced the Persian adaptation. For further support of the case, another FAIRY TALE, “Kachal the Pigeon Keeper” has also been discussed.
