USING BAYESIAN NETWORKS (BNS) APPROACH TO ANALYZE THE COST OF QUALITY (COQ) PARAMETERS

Abstract

COST OF QUALITY (COQ) is an essential element of Total Quality Management (TQM) system. The accurate assessment of such COST OF QUALITY can materially affect the reliability of quality-oriented, results-based improvements. The prevention-appraisal-failure (PAF) model is the most widely used model for determining the COST OF QUALITY. Any attempt to assess the COST OF QUALITY should take the different COST OF QUALITY parameters into consideration. However, the PAF MODEL does not take the uncertainty of COQ parameters into consideration. Moreover, the CASUAL RELATIONSHIPs among these parameters and environmental and qualitative factors are disregarded. The main objective of this paper is to incorporate PAF approach into BAYESIAN NETWORKS (BNs) and establish a probabilistic model for assessment of quality costs. BNs provide a framework for presenting inherent uncertainties and probabilistic inference among a set of variables. In this study, first, a qualitative model is developed to prioritizing PAF groups. Then, a quantitative framework is presented to numerical analysis of COQ parameters and important qualitative factors in selected PAF group. The capabilities of proposed approach are explained using data collected in chemical products manufacturing companies a case study.
