Abstract

Ascetics movement is one of the oldest social and cultural movements in the Islamic era that could not be recognized remarkably of the shadow of ISLAMIC SUFISM and could not introduce its dimensions as they are worthy. Therefore, this article is to survey some parts of Islamic history and culture. Identifying the associations between the ASCETICISM and Sufism, and paying attention to Ascetics’ functions which shows the flexible approaches of this huge cultural and social movement, tells that how seclusion, simplism and the fear from divine punishment as the first approach of this movement, slowly, and based on political and social changes in the society was replaced with critical and dynamic debate that criticized the deviation from Islamic basis in the Bani-Omayyah’s era. After this important topic and in response to fundamental intellectual and cultural needs, and based on change and evolution approach, admission of theosophical characteristics was acceptable and Ascetics movements was changed into Sufism and theosophical movement.
