Title

THE ABILITY AND ACCURACY OF IMAGING IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF THE BONE TUMOR COMPARING TO THE RESULTS OF PATHOLOGY

  24-28

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability and accuracy of imaging in the diagnosis of the bone tumors comparing to the results of pathology. It was conducted by assessment of the records of 71 patients (between 6-65 years of age) with primary diagnosis of bone tumors referred to the orthopedy department of Sina and Shariatti hospital in Tehran during two years (1993-1994) who had completed chart, lab data and radiographic studies as well as definite pathologic diagnosis. According to radiologic finding of each patient, three differential diagnoses were made and divided into the benign and malignant groups and then compared with the result of pathology, using Mc Nemar statistical test. Furthermore the frequency of bone tumors in these patients was assessed. Our findings showed that the most frequent benign and malignant tumors among these patients were giant cell tumor (18.3%) and Osteosarcoma (5.6%) and Uwing sarcoma (5.6%), respectively. Moreover the frequency of all the tumors including benign and malignant lesions in 6-25 year old patients was more than other groups. Comparing the radiologic finding with the result of biopsy showed that if all the three radiological diagnosis conformed a benign lesion, we can expect the tumor is benign with the positive predictive value of 100%. In our study these included 88% of being tumors and 65% of all the tumors that were reviewed. We can therefore conduct the diagnosis and therapulic processes in only one session to avoid further cost and time.
