Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: There is some controversy over the clinical efficacy of HYDROXY UREA in THALASSEMIA INTERMEDIA.Materials and Methods: Therapeutic efficacy of HYDROXY UREA was evaluated in 16 patients with THALASSEMIA INTERMEDIA, by measuring total HEMOGLOBIN and HEMOGLOBIN F levels before and 6months after treatment with HYDROXY UREA (20 mg/kg/day). Results: Mean increases in total HEMOGLOBIN and HEMOGLOBIN F levels 6mo after treatment with HYDROXY UREA were 1.47±1.12 gm/dl and 1.43±1.12 gm/dl, respectively. The most common mutation was found to be IV S II-I betaglobin.Discussion and Conclusions: Use of HYDROXY UREA in THALASSEMIA INTERMEDIA is associated with increases in total HEMOGLOBIN and HEMOGLOBIN F levels.
