Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was the prediction of substance abuse tendency and internet addiction based on perceived social support and stress coping styles by mediating emotional intelligence. Methods: The current study method was a correlation with a structural equation design. The study population included secondary school students in Tehran in the academic year 2018-2019. According to method of Schumacher and Lomax (2004), sample size consisted of 400 students that were selected by convenient sampling method. Participants completed internet addiction questionnaire (Yung, 1998), drug abuse (Farchad et al., 2006), emotional intelligence questionnaire (Bradbury-Graves, 2004), perceived social support (Zimet et al., 1988), and coping strategies questionnaire (Lazarus & Folkman, 1985). For testing hypotheses, the structural equation was used. Results: Results showed that predicting variables such as social support (P≤ 0. 05) and stress coping strategies (P <0/001) directly predicted tendency to substance use. In addition, social support (P <0/001) and coping strategies directly predicted internet addiction. But emotional intelligence didn`t have a significant positive direct relationship with drug abuse and internet addiction. Another research finding showed that problem-oriented coping strategies and social support through emotional intelligence had a little meditative effect on the tendency to drug abuse but through the mediation of emotional intelligence had no significant effect on internet addiction. Conclusion: With spreading social support networks, efficient coping strategies training and emotional intelligence enhancement can intervene from adolescents dealing with risky situations such as substance use and radical dependence to internet.
