Pages

  1748-1757

Abstract

Introduction: OBESITY is a serious life-threatening problem in the whole world. OBESITY is considered to be related to many conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, FATTY LIVER and different kinds of cancer. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ACUPUNCTURE on the weight loss as well as OBESITY-related biochemical factors in overweight and obese women. Methods: Forty overweight and obese women were included in this clinical trial via convenient sampling method. All samples were asked to sign an informed consent before the study. Participants were treated with ACUPUNCTURE for a period of 6 weeks, twice a week for 20 minutes per session. OBESITY-related biochemical factors which were evaluated in this study were as follow: Weight, body mass index, fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT) measured before and after treatment. T paired and Wilcoxon tests in SPSS software version 22 were used to analyze data. Results: ACUPUNCTURE was related to the decrease of weight and body mass index (P=0.001), FBS (p=0.01) and SGOT (p=0.01), while HDL was increased with ACUPUNCTURE (p=0.001).Conclusion: The results show that ACUPUNCTURE can be one of the limited methods of increasing high density lipoprotein, in addition to weight loss and decreasing BMI.
