Abstract

Background: Aphthous is considered as one of the most common diseases of the mouth and ULCER is characterized by the presence of single or multiple painful, recurring ULCERation of the oral mucosa.Aim: The aim of this epidemiological evaluation was to determine the prevalence of aphthous lesions in Tehran province during the year 1996.Materials & Method: A group of 1440 individuals were selected through a systematic cluster random sampling manner. Cases were then divided into four age groups (7-12, 15-19, 35-44, 65-74) years.Results: Results indicated that the prevalence of aphthousis lesions in these age groups were 21.4%, 35.8%, 27.8%, 13.3% respectively.Conclusion: The presences of the affected patients are significantly higher in females than males. Environmental factors, such as economic conditions and smoking seemed to affect the prevalence of aphthous in all age groups.
