Abstract

In this study, the relationship between different child rearing styles (authoritarian, democratic, and easygoing) in parents and hardiness in their children was studied. The research question was whether there was a relationship between parents’ rearing styles and hardiness in children. In order to find answer to the above question, 300 university students were selected on the basis of their sex (males and females) major (humanistic and biological branches of science) and age (19 to 25). Khobasa hardiness inventory (50 items) and Baumrind (30 items) questionnaire were administered to assess the hardiness in students and child rearing styles in parents, respectively. The Pearson correlation test and a post-hoc test (freedly+test) were used to analyze the obtained data. Regarding the obtained fact, two other hypotheses (the two sexes and the two majors differs in hardiness) were tested and to test the above hypotheses the statistical+student test was used. The results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between democratic rearing style and hardiness in children; moreover, there was a significant negative correlation between authoritarian style and hardiness. However, it seemed that easygoing rearing style and hardiness in children were not correlated. The two sexes differed significantly in hardiness but not the two university majors (humanistic and biological).
