Title

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HYPERTENSION AND RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME IN PATIENTS WITH CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES

Pages

  47-52

Abstract

Introduction: HYPERTENSION is the leading cause of premature death worldwide, which may develops to heart attacks, stroke, and heart failure. RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME is one of the factors may be associated with HYPERTENSION. The current study aimed at determining the association between HYPERTENSION and RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME in patients with CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASEs.Methods: The current cross sectional study was conducted on 290 patients with CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASEs admitted to Shahid Rajaei and Shariati hospitals in 2016 enrolled based on the convenience sampling method. The restless leg syndrome screening questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t test, and Chi-square test with SPSS version 18. P< 0.05 was considered as the level of significance. Results: Based on the results of the current study, 34.8% of patients had high blood pressure and 27.9% had RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME. There was a significant relationship between HYPERTENSION and RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME; the risk of HYPERTENSION in patients with RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME was 3.5 times higher than the ones without RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.1-6.2, odds ratio (OR) =3.6, P=0.0001].Conclusions: There is a relationship between HYPERTENSION and RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME in patients with CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASEs. It seems that evaluating RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME as a risk factor for HYPERTENSION in patients with CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASEs is necessary.
